2004 South Asian Tsunami
Global Overview
Climate change is occurring all over the globe, though its intensity and effects may vary from region to region. This article mainly focuses on the effects of climate change in South Asia ie. Afghanistan, Bangla Desh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc.
Global warming has caused a rise in temperature all over the world, from the polar regions to the tropics, regardless of the source of combustion or generation of the heat. The South Asian region has suffered heavily on this count as it already has a hot and dry climate. This has given rise to even higher temperatures in this region.
Although quite independent of the present phenomenon of climate change, the global climate does not remain uniform in any area, but normally varies in climatic cycles spanning 20-40 years. However, there is a rapid and serious overall change in the climate pattern around the world. This sudden and universal change has been attributed to the effects of anthropogenic, or man made, climate change. In America and Europe it has appeared in the shape of heat waves, floods, droughts and hurricanes etc, and in the Asian region, it has also manifested itself as freak weather patterns, heavy rainfall, floods etc. By now the causes of the current erratic climate are well known as being due to the global warming that has occurred in the last 5 or 6 decades. The major anthropogenic cause of the rise in global temperatures is the burning of fossil fuels and massive deforestation to make way for agricultural land or human settlements.
