Folk Music Roots
Born in 1942 while his father was training pilots in Pensacola, Steve lived at Harvard until 1947. Steve's father, who moved the family to California after graduating from law school, played songs like "Saint Louis Blues" and "The Sunny Side of the Street," on piano. He also did folk songs like "Frankie and Johnny." Steve's romance with folk music began when his uncle gave him a ukulele.
"As I have developed as a musician and student of music theory and poetry," Steve says, "I've become more appreciative of the authentic truth of folk music, and value the freedom of intellectual endeavor that the folk music audiences encourage."
