The Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing mobile media market with topmost activity reflected in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, according to Dr. Lai in a personal communication dated June 21, 2010. The growing market has led BuzzCity to develop a social network entitled myGamma.com. According to a graph by BuzzCity, the social networking service is now used in 89 countries and translated into 190 languages.

What started as a wireless application protocol with its launch in 2003, has progressed into a social network that includes blogs, chats, profile, games, activities and more. MyGamma.com has the highest usage in India, Kenya, Libya, Indonesia and Thailand. Usage in Thailand alone has reached 200,000 in July of 2009, according to a May 12, 2010 article "MyGamma Launched in Thailand" in the Bangkok Post.

Unwired Mobile Users in the Asia Pacific Region

A few years ago, BuzzCity was surprised to learn who actually uses social networks on mobile phones. According to a 2007 BuzzCity survey, researchers discovered that instead of rich, trendy users the majority of mobile users are people who do not have a personal computer (PC) at home or regular access to one and fall in the lower economic bracket. They also tend to have a post-secondary education, with 66 percent falling between the ages of 20-30 years-old. Furthermore, students, small business owners, and blue-collar and service-industry workers make-up an essential part of the community.

Winning the Best Mobile Social Networking Service Award at both the 2007 & 2008 Global Mobile Awards voted by members of the Mobile World Congress, myGamma.com has stretched its popularity to countries such as Egypt, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Nigeria which all fall in the top 10 category of countries using the social network, according to a graph by BuzzCity.

Dr. Lai's Original 'Sally' Project

The emotional need for human contact was reflected in one of Dr. Lai's original projects entitled Sally, a forerunner to myGamma.com. "The work on Sally was based on ALICE of the Artificial Intelligence Foundation. In 2003 we adapted the technology to interface with the mobile phone text messaging system. Users can send in messages and chat with “Sally”, the chatbot that mimics human responses," stated Dr. Lai in a personal communication.

According to a February 5, 2004 article "Much A-Buzz About Dr. Lai" in the K-Batsu Newsletter, Dr. Lai originally thought the program was silly, however, was shocked by the rather large response by people seeking human to human contact. Today, myGamma.com's popularity is continuing to climb throughout the world in satisfaction of this need for contact.
