Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a freestyle martial arts sport that combines everything from Brazilian jiujitsu to Western wrestling to produce the best possible fighting style. Relatively young but highly demanding, MMA has caught on significantly in the United States due to the popular Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). Even more recently, MMA has been finding its footing in Asia, especially in Japan and Korea, but also Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore and China. This has given birth to rising regional stars like Dennis Kang, Cung Le, Brandon Vera, Nam Phan, Chai Mu Bae and Ray Elbe. In 2009, the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Federation was founded to standardise rules and regulations, and promote MMA within the continent.
The business of MMA in Asia
With its strong cultural roots in martial arts and large population, MMA in Asia is poised to become extremely lucrative. However, explosive financial success has been obstructed by charging limitations, the almost-monolithic presence of traditional martial arts (TMA), and dearth of professional fighting opportunities. In China, where UFC has recently established itself permanently, there is no Pay-Per-View television system to feed revenue and the Central government controls the media. It is hence intensely difficult for fight promoters to spark multi-million dollar franchises in the country.
