What do houseboats, dhotis and prayer bells have in common? You can find them all in India. India is made up of many states, each having specific characteristics. While New Delhi is the country’s capital, Mumbai is the nation’s busiest city. The population of India stands at approximately 1.15 billion. Hinduism is the country’s number one religion with 80% of the population following this faith.
Bengal Tiger, Endangered Species
India is home to many contrasting environments- there are the beautiful sun drenched beaches of Goa and the world’s highest mountain ranges- the snow capped Himalayas. India is also home to the Bengal Tiger- currently an endangered species. The tiger is India’s national animal.
The Houseboats of Jammu and Kashmir
Most of India’s houseboats can be found on lakes in the Jammu and Kashmir regions. Dhotis are traditional white cloths worn by men; the cloth is wrapped around the body and tucked between the legs. Buddhists use prayer bells during worship- it's believed that shaking the bells wards away evil spirits while attracting kindly ones. A visit to India reveals a country with a captivating past and a promising future.
